The City Stadium in Wroclaw was designed for 43 thousands football fans eager for football excitement. Built from the end of 2008 the stadium eventually took the shape of a lantern, symbolizing the rapidly developing “City of Meetings”.
The stadium design documentation contained about 6 thousand drawings. If spread out flat they would occupy more than 2/3 of the turf and if put on a pile in A4 format they would reach as high as the fifth floor.
The stadium has been built according to the latest UEFA standards and equipped with all state-of-the-art technical facilities necessary for the professional organisation of mass events, including the loudspeaker, lighting and visual systems with two LES displays of 90 square meters each and over 200 LCD screens. The building was also equipped with a professional catering service with a cashless payment system, central beverage distribution system and production backup facilities.
The Stadium is encircled by a promenade (esplanade) that makes it possible for fans to reach the stadium from two public transport access nodes.
The stadium is equipped with a special water treatment system. The runoff water from the roof is collected in four tanks located under the arena and reused for turf irrigation and flushing toilets.
The inauguration of the building, the construction of which commenced on 12 September 2008, was crowned with a series of sports and entertainment events in September 2011, including a concert of George Michael on 17 September.
During the European Championships in 2012, three group stage matches will be played here on 8, 12 and 16 June 2012. The stadium is the home ground of local football club WKS Śląsk Wroclaw.
