Poland belongs to many international organizations and communities. In addition to the UN, most important include NATO (since 1999) and the European Union (since 2004). Since December 2007 Poland became a part of the Schengen Zone, which allows citizens to travel within the area of 22 European countries without a passport. Poland is known for such famous writers’ names as: Wislawa Szymborska, Stanislaw Lem, Ryszard Kapuscinski, Witkacy, Bruno Schulz, Witold Gombrowicz, Zbigniew Herbert and Slawomir Mrozek. Although soccer is the national sport of Poles, its representatives are successful in other disciplines: in volleyball, handball, tennis, ski jumping and cross-country skiing or motorcycle speedway and Formula 1.
